Family First Nights 20th Anniversary Art Competition

Calling all talented young artists!

To mark the 20th Anniversary of Family First Nights in 2018, we’re inviting young participants to showcase their creativity in our art competition!

We’re looking for colourful, joyful illustrations that reflect the magic of theatregoing for families. Your children could draw your family visiting the theatre, or some of their favourite shows or characters on stage. Anything goes… and we’d love to see some performing mice!

Entries will be judged by two of Britain’s most renowned illustrators of children’s books:

  • Nick Sharratt (pictured above), who created the iconic Tracy Beaker illustrations for Jacqueline Wilson
  • Tony Ross, the man behind Horrid Henry and all the amazing artwork in David Walliams’ books!

The judges will select three winners who will each receive:

  • A certificate and books signed by our two star judges
  • A £100 voucher to spend on art materials at Cass Art
  • FAME on the Mousetrap website and social media channels!

In case you need a little inspiration to get creative and enter the competition, here's a little word from judge Nick Sharratt - AKA Mr Tracy Beaker!

"I'm honoured and delighted to have been asked to judge this special competition.

When I was growing up I don't think I found anything quite as exciting as an outing to the theatre. I still remember vividly the very first shows and pantomimes I was taken to see, around the time I was just starting school.  Later on, when I was in the juniors I joined a drama club at a theatre in my town. I wasn't very good at acting but I just couldn't wait for Saturdays and the sheer thrill of getting to spend a time in such a magical place.

And now, as an author/illustrator, I feel very lucky to have seen several of the books I've worked on turned into plays. To watch characters that I've drawn on paper brought to life by actors on stage really is the most extraordinary experience.

There's nowhere like a theatre for stimulating the imagination and I'm looking forward immensely to seeing the fabulous illustrations inspired by young people's own theatre visits!"

Nick has illustrated close to 250 books and worked with authors including Julia Donaldson, Micheal Rosen and most notably Dame Jacqueline Wilson, for whom he illusrtated the iconic Tracy Beaker series.
